Last Kick at the Can

I am so  fortunate.  I have people in my life, who will spontaneously agree to head to the beach for the day, rather than spending the day catching up on chores.  Originally, we thought we would go to the sailboats' beach, but taking into consideration that it was a long weekend Friday, and everyone in town would be trying to get out, we decided to go the road 'less travelled' and ended up here instead.  It was a drop-dead gorgeous day.  The ocean breeze breathed new life into us as we gazed out at the water, taking in the sights.  I said I thought it would be a cool project to choose a spot on the beach and take still shots of the same spot for several hours.  Each one becomes a moving vignette of people coming to enjoy the day, with their buckets and boards and shell-seeking agendas.
It was shortly after our arrival, that we decided to eat. Each mom brought out their provisions and everyone shared in the bounty.  She brought all the healthy snacks (multi-grain bread, peanut butter, bananas, cherries, asparagus tips) and I brought all the junk (licorice, Reisens, pretzels,  and pop).  It turned out to be a good mix.  We sat.  We ate.  We lay down on the beach blankets.  We sat up again.  We talked about the sun - and everything under it.  All of us ignored the fact that school was just around the corner.  We convinced each other to be in the moment and not to think ahead to the coming year.  After all there was so much to take in.
The best part is people watching.  We talked about how different it was bringing the big kids to the beach.  No counting heads every two minutes.  No kissing scraped knees and toes that hit the rocks.  No breaking up scrabbles between siblings.  We could send them off and they would come back after wading out into the water to have a massive sea-weed fight.  We could watch the little girl with the gorgeous hair, and never worry about her - she wasn't ours!  And most of all, when it came to ice-cream time, we didn't have to use up all the Wet Wipes to clean up faces and hands.
It was a great last "kick at the can".  Hurry up summer.  Come again!
