Event Planning

It has been an eventful week. What to talk about? The Royal Wedding? The Election? Taxes? No, I'm going to leave those topics for someone else to tackle. I'm going to tell you about The Birthday Party. For weeks, we'd been planning, scheming, gathering, Finally, on Friday, the day arrived for us to celebrate two gals' 60th birthdays. They weren't twins, but because they share a birth year, we had a joint party. I arrived a little early to help set up the room. We moved furniture, blew up balloons, hung posters [specially made by one of our gals] and pictures  and got the food and drink tables ready.

Soon everyone arrived with their additions. Birthday signs, cakes, appetizers, drinks, main courses, and desserts suddenly appeared, as if by magic.  Each person had been invited to dress up according to the theme "Hippie"/"Newfie" party.  One of the gals grew up in Newfoundland, and one had been the quintessential hippie.  So people came in garb that were various interpretations of the theme.  Some had gumboots, some had flowy dresses or skirts, and flowers  in their hair. Everyone was offered a flower 'tattoo' to put on to help them get in the mood.

Once dinner had been consumed, the 'show' began.  Each birthday girl was treated to a presentation or two - skits and

a song.  The 'choir' sounded fantastic.  And the birthday girls didn't even mind that we made light of turning over another decade.  At the end, we gave them each a charm bracelet for which we had each chosen a charm.  One of our gals had made them. [We have a lot of talent in our group] One was blue, and one was green - the perfect colours for each of them.  We went around the circle and told each birthday girl what we had chosen, and why.  To me, this was the best part of the evening.  It was so interesting to hear what people had decided on - and  so very personal - there was even a tear or two shed for how much thought had been put into this.

The evening was a smashing success.  "Fantastic" according to one of the birthday girls; "Five-star" according to the other.  Once again, I felt blessed to work with people who genuinely care about each other in and out of the work place.

Isn't he just the sweetest thing? Those dark eyes turned blue and the black hair turned blond, and too quickly, this little guy grew taller than his dad and me. Today, it is eighteen years since that bright, blue-skies February morning when he made his debut. It has been eighteen years of many wonderful memories. Freedom

I decided to make March my month to release the expired. So far...   I have thrown out all makeup with less than one drop in the bottom of the jar.    I finally dumped the cauliflower in cheeze sauce I made for Christmas dinner.      I threw out the Pepto Bismol from 2010 - not even opened. It feels good to be rid of them.  It also makes me happy that I won't have to worry about bacteria in old makeup   And that my husband won't get sick from my cooking    And that my health has been good enough not to need the Pepto Bismol at all. Inspired by these events, I went through my closets. It is almost time to swap the winter for the summer.  My winter clothes seemed to have stood the test of time for now.  However, my shoes were showing major signs of wear.  I decided on two pairs that I need to say "Farewell" to.
