The Week in Review

"Teach us Lord to number our days".
This has been brought home to me again this week as I learned of the sudden death of a friend's dad. I wish that I had some brilliant things to say. But I am not feeling very brilliant. So I will post instead, a reading that has brought me comfort in times of my own grief.

I sometimes smile because I do not know any more than they do. When a young man asked if I looked forward to being united with God and those who have gone before me, I made a connection to an old memory.

The first time I traveled with my mother and my sister to my parents’homeland in northern Italy, I felt as if I had been there before. After years of looking through my mother’s photo albums, I knew the mountains, the land,

the houses, the people. As soon as we entered the valley, I said: “I know this place. I am home.” Somehow I think crossing from this life into life Eternal will be similar. I will be home.”

Isn't he just the sweetest thing? Those dark eyes turned blue and the black hair turned blond, and too quickly, this little guy grew taller than his dad and me. Today, it is eighteen years since that bright, blue-skies February morning when he made his debut. It has been eighteen years of many wonderful memories. I decided to make March my month to release the expired. So far...   I have thrown out all makeup with less than one drop in the bottom of the jar.    I finally dumped the cauliflower in cheeze sauce I made for Christmas dinner.      I threw out the Pepto Bismol from 2010 - not even opened. It feels good to be rid of them.  It also makes me happy that I won't have to worry about bacteria in old makeup   And that my husband won't get sick from my cooking    And that my health has been good enough not to need the Pepto Bismol at all. Inspired by these events, I went through my closets. It is almost time to swap the winter for the summer.  My winter clothes seemed to have stood the test of time for now.  However, my shoes were showing major signs of wear.  I decided on two pairs that I need to say "Farewell" to.
